Playa Arboletes

Arboletes Mud Volcano

The natural mud volcano by Playa Arboletes: what it is, how it forms (diapirism) and visiting tips.

A few steps from the beach is a mud volcano formed by diapirism: gas and pressurized water push mineral-rich clay to the surface. It is a geological curiosity you can visit separately from the beach.

What is the mud volcano?

It is not a magma volcano but a "mud diapirism" phenomenon: natural gas and pressurized water push mineral clay outward, creating a pool of warm mud. The mud is rich in sulfur, magnesium and calcium, and very buoyant due to its density.

Location

It sits a few steps from the shore of Playa Arboletes, within the town. You can walk there from the main beach.

Visiting tips

Wear old clothes you do not mind staining. The mud is very buoyant, but that does not replace supervision — non-swimmers should stay in shallow areas and never enter alone.

Access status

Access, open areas and safety rules can change due to coastal erosion or environmental recovery. Confirm the current status and permitted areas before visiting.
